I’m trying the bk lifestyle today. It’s been pretty nice, but I’ve found it a bit distracting. The grandkids are next door. It was somebody’s birthday. There was lots of running around and swimming, etc.

I guess I should explain what I mean by the bk lifestyle. My friend bk is doing editing work for the Ludwig von Mises Institute. He does this predominately on his powerbook. When he’s in Charlottesville, which he is this month, he spends most of his time doing his computing on his back deck. He plugs the laptop into a power outlet that his wife had run out to the back deck for this exact purpose, and uses his wireless network for internet access. Add to that a fan for the hot days, and he’s set.

Generally, I’m a desktop person. I like big monitors. I like larger keyboards. I like faster computers with kickin’ video cards for games. But our office is in the basement. Today I took my mom’s old laptop out to the screened-in back porch, installed ubuntu on it and started computing out back. It was a great day for it (except for the grandkids next door). The high was in the high-70s, it was partly cloudy with occasional drizzle. I certainly see the appeal. Now, I just need to get another LCD monitor, a full-sized keyboard, and maybe one of those Anthro carts and I’ll be in good shape. Of course, if I have all of that, I may as well just get an extra desktop for the back porch. And if I’m going that far, certainly I need my Aeron chair and then I’ll really be set — until it gets too cold. But that won’t be for another month at least! 😉
