  • I’m in San Francisco tonight on business. It’s the first night in my daughter’s life that we’ve not slept in the same room. It feels a little odd to be this out of touch — the flight landed here after I hope both wife and daughter were well asleep.

I’m in the “Dirty Harry” room of the Hotel Bijou. It’s kinda cool in a funky, downtown-y way. I don’t know if I’m exactly in the red light district, but I’m certainly not in the upscale neighborhood judging by the adult dvd mega stores, and the bars on the windows. Perhaps naively, I don’t feel unsafe though.

  • To compensate for my ordinary shoes… er, I mean for my complete lack of writing, I offer you another round of pictures. A few from the Princeton trip, a few from some more lounging on the chair.

  • At 4:43 PM today, Sam entered New Jersy on US1, finally making it out of her birth state after “only” about 5 and a half months.

  • Sorry I’ve been so quiet recently. I actually have a few things to say, but have been having trouble focusing on this. Partly because of busy (baby still = handful, + clients, etc.), also because there’s some stuff going on that I can’t blog yet. I hate when that happens because I feel like it blocks up the rest of my creativity as well.

Anyway, the only real reason for this entry is to mention that there are a bunch of new pictures up of the world’s cutest baby. You should check them out.

  • Sammy Mammy here. Thanks to all those who sent us your sleep stories, ideas, and encouragement, here in the comments and elsewhere. We’ve had a variable week. It still takes a while to get Sam to sleep at bedtime, but we’ve had more success with her naps. One thing that seems to help is not letting her stay up longer than 2 hours at a time, in addition to watching for signs of sleepiness.

  • So, sharing videos is not exactly a meme, but I’ve happened to come across a few recently that I quite enjoyed, though the entire collection below is likely to be interesting only to someone with my particular collection of interests:

    • Homemade lightsaber movie (really good): “http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=672422470842718521&q=ryan+dorkman”:http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=672422470842718521&q=ryan+dorkman

    • Laughing quadruplets: “http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5619481843152124341”:http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5619481843152124341

    • Will Wright talks about the really fascinating new game spore: “http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8372603330420559198&q=spore”:http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8372603330420559198&q=spore (see also the “game’s homepage”:http://www.spore.com/)

    • Finally, “What happens when you drive a car behind a 747 with its engines on full?”:http://www.dumpalink.com/media/1132999307/747_Jet_Crosswinds_Top_Gear_Test

  • Dear Readers of ChoicyWhiteBoy:

Help! Sammy Mammy here. Our darling baby Samantha does not want to go to sleep. Ever. Well, she sleeps pretty well between midnight and 6am, getting up once around 2am to eat. But we continue to have a devil of a time getting her to sleep. Nap irregularity during the day we can handle; however, the nightly bedtime battle is really getting to me.

We have been doing the same nightly routine (bath, book, breast) for over a month. We can never seem to get her to sleep until 11pm even when we start the routine early. Some nights we’re lucky and she falls asleep while nursing. Other nights (like tonight) we are cursed with the baby who screams in her daddy’s arms as he tries to sing and rock her to sleep. Screams like nails on the chalkboard of my soul. We did not want to follow the cry it out method of Ferber and others, and generally we do not mind rocking, singing, or nursing her to sleep. But sometimes she resists sleep with every fiber of her little being. It can sometimes take an hour to get her to sleep and then she will sleep only 30 minutes.

  • Sam had a nice, long, unsupported sit today. Maybe 30-45 seconds. Mom and dad were impressed.

  • Samantha,

I’m just about ready to stop apologizing for the fact that your monthly newsletter, while coming out every month, does not, in fact, come out on (or even very close to) your actual, specific birthday. I’m a more sporadic blogger than I’d like to be, and your newsletter suffers somewhat for that fact. Nonetheless, it’s here now, and I’m pleased to report that your fifth month was once again a banner month for you.

  • I’ve been meme tagged, and I’m never sure what to do with those. I was just going to silently ignore it except when I told my wife that, she said, “Aww, I was looking forward to what you were going say.” So, now I’m doing it. Kinda.

    Four Jobs I’ve Had:

    1. “Boy” for an outdoors/watersport retailer

    2. Country Music DJ — “This is Thirteen Ten on your AM dial, W – T – I – K, Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill — Now, back to NASCAR at Talladega with M. R. N., The Motor RACING Network!”
